Police Riot stampedes crowd on corner of Queen and Spadina

According to the lastest reports, After no warning was given (no reading of the riot act) blanket arrests of all at Toronto's Queen Street and Spadina was carried out. With police wildly swinging clubs and causing a stampede which resulted in the trampling of people. Injuries were extensive. More details are sure to come out in the coming days.

Fortress Toronto, the media and police

Police using secret intelligence to pick up key activists as a preventative pre-crime measure have been widely reported in the mainstream media as well as on the Toronto Media Co-op website. Such reports eerily sound like a plot out of Philip K. Dick's short story Minority Report.
Journalists have been routinely attacked. In addition to the usual targets of independent media reporters, a CTV producer was snatched. As reported on toronto media coop, and the Dominion, A reporter from the Manchester Guardian was " held by two cops while a third punched him in the stomach because he 'talked too much', then drove his elbow into the collapsed journalist's back." Four reporters, two from Reuters, and two from the National Post were arrested.
CCLA observers detained refused contacts
Mark Donald and Jon Pipitone, two observers with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association were arrested and has not yet had contact with lawyers to date. The CCLA had about 60 observers on the streets.
Innocent bystander has police sneak into house, wakes up with gun barrel in face
As reported in the Dominion, Toronto Media Co-op and the Toronto Star, Veterinarian John Booth awoke to find cops with their gun sights beaded on his head. Hanna Booth Awoke to find men entering her six month old baby's room. "...Not ringing the doorbell — they’re in my room. I’m in my panties and a tank top, my kid’s screaming his head off, he’s so scared, the tension in the house — it was just the most horrible and absurd thing."

The Knocks in the Night: beaten in beds - then dragged off as political prisoners

press release by Toronto Community Mobilization Network
June 26, 2010
For Immediate Release:
Press Release At least 4 community organizers currently being held as
political prisoners as G20 related police repression continues to
increase.
As the G20 meetings happen behind fortified fences, numerous long-time
community organizers working on issues ranging from migrant justice to
climate change to indigenous sovereignty are being targeted and arrested
by police.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., June 26, about 20 police officers raided a
Toronto home. They entered the house without consent through the back
door, aggressively dragging unclothed people from their beds, kicking
others who were asleep on the floor.
Police demanded that everyone provide names and identification. A number
of people repeatedly requested to view the warrant before complying with
police demands.
“I requested a warrant at least five times from the cop who refused to
show me his badge number, to which he said they have every legal right to
do what they’re doing and they didn’t have to show us anything,” said
Tammy Kovich, a resident of the raided house.
Police forcibly detained and cuffed a number of people, and refused to
allow those in the house to call for legal advice. Without showing
warrants, asking consent, or giving notice, police did an illegal cursory
search of some of the people on the premises as well as the house itself.
“I went out the front door to get a signal so that I could call for legal
advice, and a cop grabbed me and pushed me back towards the house. A
minute later, I was on the phone with the G20 legal people, and he grabbed
my phone away from me and smashed it onto the front porch,” stated another
resident, Renee Henderson.
One arrest was made at this house: an organizer of G20 Childcare as well
as other community projects. A warrant was not shown for their arrest.
This individual was also detained and harassed by police earlier this week
while walking on in Toronto, and was searched without credible legal
rationale.
Across town, the door to another house was kicked in and three long time
community organizers Leah Henderson, Alex Hundert and Mandy Hiscocks were
placed under arrest. Warrants have also been issued for the arrest of
other community organizers. These politically motivated raids and arrests
of community members are just some of the tactics the police have been
using to intimidate and silence those who have voiced their concern about
the illegitimate and undemocratic institutions of the G8/G20.

news-arrest warrants for calgary fascists
A posting on the neo-nazi stormfront Canada forum reported that the Aryan Guard officially disbanded.
The discussion thread blamed a rowdy lot of drunks for ruining the group and says that the "...bombing attack was launched against the former girlfriend of ... John Marleau - an associate of the Aryan Guard"
According to the Calgary Sun: "The 29-year-old woman living in the townhouse says she has nothing to do with the neo-Nazis, and was targeted because she spurned the advances of a senior Aryan Guard member, who is "best friends" with the accused. "He's stalking me," said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.
Welcome news after the statement of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Canada on November 4th. read it here.
trivia: do you know that the makers of doc martens boots have tried to sue white supremacists over the years? The claim is that fascists have hurt the reputation of the famous brand.

news over the past while, of interest to youth-long title I know.
- WINNIPEG- At the steps of the legislature, members of the University of Manitoba's Campus Conservatives tried to block Canadian Federation of Students members from marching up the steps during November 5th's Day of Action. Tried is the keyword. The counter protest was swamped by students in the CFS lead action.
- GOD'S RIVER, MANITOBA- September 16th. Students hold classes in a tent after the school building failed to meet the fire code. Teachers made the most of the situation however by adding such traditional teaching such as fishing, bannock making to the curriculum. The school has since been fixed, but the incident brings to attention the seriousness of the lack of proper funding in northern, and reservation schools. Not to mention government bureaucracy. Government building plans requiring paved parking lots in a fly in community is but one example of such red tape.
- WINNIPEG- Manitoba Justice held a forum in early October telling people in Winnipeg's North End to report sex workers to the authorities. Rational for this is that many sex workers in an area will be an indicator of a drug house nearby. Reports will therefore help shut down such drug houses. Residents at the forum however had other ideas. Some asked why the laws cannot be updated and a red light district set up. "At least they'd know what's happening, and it's not out in the open," said Marie, a resident who did not want her last name used. It was reported that some bail conditions for sex workers barred them from entering certain zones, including in some cases Sage House, a place for people who are trying to leave the sex trade.
- BRANDON, MANITOBA- Too Much Macho? In September police in Brandon, Manitoba laid charges against people involved in a bare knuckle fight club called "Brandon Beat Down" after a fighter was sent to hospital with a ruptured spleen. The group was modelled after the movie and book fight club. In the movie a line goes "the first rule of fight club is, you do not talk about fight club." However a video was posted to YouTube and police took note and the video was pulled. When youth self organise, they go all out it seems. Maybe it's time for funding more recreation programs for youth. First budget item: boxing gloves.
- WINNIPEG- In September, 29 year old Geraldine Beardy from Garden Hill First Nation was beaten into a coma for trying to shoplift a $1.49 can of meat from a store in Winnipeg. When confronted, she was told to leave the store. After this, she was bludgeoned with a bat. The store's owner has been charged with assault after the death of the victim. Vigilantism is a suspected motive in the attack. Protecting property rights has really gone overboard.
- WINNIPEG- City Council approved new garbage carts designed to automate trash collection, reducing the need for workers. After the so called "semi-privatization" of the water and waste department, these new bins are to have RFID chip technology to track bins and many predict, impose new user fees for waste collection. Good for the environment. Bad for the poor. Bad for clean streets.
- NEW DELHI, INDIA- In November, Authorities in New Delhi, India have released 25 child workers/slaves from a factory sweat shop. In a story that reads like Pinocchio and the puppet master, the children were enslaved after their parents were tricked into sending them to the city to attend school. The children, with ages between 8 and 14, were forced to make toys and were often beaten for poor work, given rations of two meals a day and forced to sleep in the factory.
- BRANDON, MANITOBA-Four Filipino workers in Brandon, Manitoba have been subjected to mistreatment while working at the local Wendy's restaurant. Imelda Campecino, Alan Acar, Glen Syping, and Mercedes Comia paid $3000 to a employment agency and $1700 each in airfare to go to Saskatchewan. The workers were told that the expenses to the agency and airfares would be reimbursed. After arriving in a restaurant in that province, they were told there was no work and sent to Brandon. ( The laws regarding foreign workers are more lax in Saskatchewan* ). The Brandon eatery happened to be owned by the same Trotter family that owned the Saskatchewan business. The four workers were docked $600 a month to live in a house owned by their boss, for a whopping $2400 a month. The going rate for a comparable house was $1200 plus utilities. They were threatened with being sent back to the Philippines regularly. At one point passports were briefly withheld according to a Brandon comrade's discussion with the workers. Alan Acar injured his wrist at work, and had to pay for the medical treatment himself. When he missed his shift due to his time off for medical treatment, he was fired. The other three workers refused to return to work after the fourth was canned. According to the CBC report, Barb Bakker, a Saskatchewan-based manager of the Trotters' business, threatened the four with eviction as well as cancellation of their work permits and even arrest. Communists, labour activists and local politicians soon heard of the situation. Protests were to have taken place during the Manitoba Federation of Labour's convention in Brandon but were postponed until the story broke on the CBC television news . An NDP MLA's office secured another job for the workers in Thompson, Manitoba to clear up any legal limbo due to the shadiness of the previous work situation. A protest did occur latter at the Brandon Wendy's and this protest marked a serious rift in the Brandon labour council executive and activist sections. Some on the council were for and some against the action. The Manitoba Department of Labour has taken action in the case, helping recover money for unauthorized deductions and unpaid wages, holiday, overtime, and vacation pay. The franchise owner, Jordan Trotter, has since reimbursed the airfare. Another success story for foreign worker and immigration programs. For bosses.
- SELKIRK, MANITOBA-The RCMP in Selkirk, Manitoba defended it's use of torture against a 16 year old girl in a cell in 2007 (the incident was reported in the People's Voice). The police say that the girl, who was drunk, shoved an officer and then, was tasered and fitted with a spit mask. The girl claims that four officers held her down while tasering her three times. Scars on her thigh tell the story. Taser use against kids is not all that rare. In Ontario, a 14 year old girl in Sioux Lookout afflicted with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome was tasered by police while in custody.
- SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA-September 29. Soldier Matthew Wilcox was sentenced to 2 years in prison for shooting another soldier in a tent in Afghanistan. The soldier has recurring nightmares and shows signs of post-tramatic stress disorder.
- BRANDON, MANITOBA-At Brandon University, the new "Afghanistan Mission Memorial Award" was announced, giving free tuition to children of slain soldiers. Very macabre. Of course there are strings. To be eligible to receive the award, a student must have graduated from high school and have started the first year of study before the age of 21 and is good only for a first degree. What? Having your parents die for your education isn't good enough? How many hoops are there to jump through? It looks like a public relations stunt since only a handful of students would qualify. Losing a parent is a high price to pay.
- PINE FALLS, MANITOBA- Town residents walked the picket line alongside locked out workers. Business owners said that the lock out at the Tembec paper mill was hurting small businesses. The lock out started on August 31. Tembec Inc. wants a 35 per cent cut in wages and benefits. The lock out drags on well into November and still continues. 70 workers and their families have left the town in search of work. A food bank, the USW/COPE Family Resource Centre has been set up for the workers. Bannock and soup from the nearby First Nation was sent. A worker explains a common feeling about the tough times during the lockout: "Personally I find it embarrassing, disappointing and frustrating. I've been a working man since I was 17 years old. Pride is a big thing. I can't believe I need charity." Funny that everyone is giving this Christmas except the Tembec mill owners. Want to be more generous than millionaires? donate to the resource centre or help out. Contact Bouvier at 367-2323 or Bruneau at 367-8989, or e-mail usw31375 (AT) mts.net. It should be noted that Tembec's pine falls mill had previously shut down its de-inking plant citing the low cost of pulp wood making it more profitable to use logs over recycled paper.
- OTTAWA- Protesters took democracy into their own hands during the Oct.26th question period in the House of Commons and were arrested and removed with force because of it. The protest was about climate change and government's inaction. Six protesters were arrested. 120 more were kicked out of the house. Canada.com mentioned: "Veteran parliamentarians said they could not recall a protest in the House of Commons that had ever involved so many people or which seemed as well-orchestrated." If you care about public affairs they arrest you. But if you are apathetic, keep to yourself, and don't question, well you are the model citizen.
- UNITED KINGDOM-The war over copyright continued in the United Kingdom as Microsoft zapped the Xbox Live service to owners of modified Xbox 360 consoles. The consoles are able to play pirated games. While the modified consoles still work as stand alone units, they are unable to connect to Xbox Live. Only unmodified units still have that capability. So far.

from People's Voice: WHO ARE THE HATEMONGERS IN CALGARY?

A recent report for the Southern Poverty Law Centre sheds important light on the hate group which is spreading its violent message in southern Alberta. The Intelligence Report by Sonia Scherr begins with a brief account of a clash last March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism:
"Wielding `White Pride Worldwide' flags and wearing black combat boots, about 40 members of the Aryan Guard and their supporters strode through the heart of Calgary... to broadcast their message of hate at City Hall. But they never got there. Instead, they encountered several hundred anti-racist protesters, some of whom threw rocks, water bottles and even cans of vegetables at the group as traffic came to a halt and police called for backup. Police eventually herded the neo-Nazis onto a bus that returned them to their vehicles on Calgary's outskirts. Though no serious injuries were reported, the melee snared headlines across Canada and prompted Aryan Guard spokesman Kyle McKee - who has `Kill Jews' tattooed on his shins - to declare victory."
The Aryan Guard have spread fear and anger among Calgary's 250,000 immigrant and minority populations.
"Essentially a racist gang," writes Scherr, "the Aryan Guard is the most public hate group to appear in Calgary - which, like much of western Canada, has a history of such activity going back to the Klan of the 1920s - in the past two decades. These Nazi look-alikes have clashed with counter-protesters at rallies in the city's downtown, handed out white-power music CDs to teenagers in an attempt to bolster their membership, and perpetrated attacks on minorities despite espousing non-violence."
The Aryan Guard was founded in late 2006 with help from two former teachers: Paul Fromm of the Canadian Association for Free Expression, who lost his teaching certificate because of his white supremacist activities, and National Socialist Party of Canada leader Terry Tremaine, a former part-time university lecturer who in 2007 was fined $4,000 by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal because of his racist and anti-Semitic Internet postings.
"They were the main catalysts behind bringing these young fellows here," said Constable Lynn MacDonald, hate crimes coordinator for the Calgary Police Service.
MacDonald says the Aryan Guard now has roughly 20 full-fledged members, and another 20 to 30 supporters, including those belonging to the Valkyrian Legion, or woman's wing of the Aryan Guard, which consists mostly of the girlfriends of male members. The majority are in their early 20s.
The group began to draw attention in 2007, when members began distributing hate literature in Calgary and Lethbridge.
In August 2007, the Aryan Guard began disrupting anti-racism rallies. Two months later, they rallied outside City Hall to denounce Muslim women who wear burkas while voting. Since then, they have conducted sporadic demonstrations, including "White Pride Day" rallies held on the International Day for the Elimination of Racism.
As Scherr notes, "the Aryan Guard has found itself vastly outnumbered by anti-racist protesters, including members of Anti-Racist Action Calgary." While police say both Aryan Guard members and counter-protesters have been arrested for assaults, ARA spokesperson Jason Devine says no member has been charged in connection with any incident at an Aryan Guard rally.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Police Service admits that Aryan Guard members have been linked to several assaults, including one against a cab driver from North Africa.
Writing about this attack on the neo-Nazi Stormfront website, McKee boasted about getting the case dismissed: "The reason being was that they couldn't make a positive ID because apparently everyone there was all dressed in combat boots with white laces [and] black flight jackets and all had shaved heads. So let this be a lesson to anyone who wonders why on earth all us skinheads dress so similarly. [T]his is another great reason. lol [laughing out loud]".
In July 2008, a 17-year-old Aryan Guard member who had been making anti-Asian remarks followed a young Japanese woman as she left a bar and kicked her in the back of the head with steel-toed boots. He was wearing red laces - a skinhead symbol indicating he'd spilled blood for the movement.
ARA members believe that the Aryan Guard is responsible for the violent attacks against Jason and Bonnie Devine's home. Aryan Guard members have taunted the couple about the firebomb attack. "Is it hot in there?" they have asked during protests, according to Devine. "How are the kids? How's the house?"
And in yet another ugly case, four Aryan Guard members were charged with disturbing the peace after vandalizing a shopping mall and using racial slurs on a First Nations reserve near Calgary.
Scherr reports that two of the group's most prominent members, McKee and Dallas Price, faced assault and weapons charges in connection with a September 2006 confrontation in which one victim was hit with a wooden club and another was stabbed with a knife. Guard member Robert Reitmeier was charged with attempted murder in connection with a November 2006 assault on a man who suffered skull and facial fractures. Member Bill Noble was convicted in 2008 of posting hate material on the Internet that primarily targeted non-whites, Jews and gays. A judge sentenced him to four months in jail and imposed limits on his computer use for three years, though Noble continues to post frequently on Stormfront.
COMMUNIST PARTY CONDEMNS CALGARY POLICE INACTION
The failure by the Calgary Police Service to seriously investigate neo-Nazi violence against anti-racist activists is a reckless and shocking dereliction of duty which endangers lives. On October 3, the family home of Jason and Bonnie Devine and their four young children was the target of yet another such attack, in which windows were smashed and Neo-nazi graffiti was spray-painted on the front door: a swastika and "C-18", an obvious reference to the violent British fascist organization known as "Combat 18." In February 2009, the house was firebombed with molotov cocktails.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt in either incident, but the long history of email and telephone threats against the Devine family is ample warning that they remain in serious danger. The most likely suspects are in plain view - the Aryan Guard group which has been actively promoting racism and neo-Nazi ideology in Calgary for several years. Jason and Bonnie Devine have been in the forefront of community activists calling attention to the Aryan Guard. Both have campaigned as candidates for the Communist Party, and their courage has clearly angered the local fascists.
Despite its motto, "To maximize public safety in Calgary with vigilance, courage, and pride," the Calgary Police Service has ignored repeated public appeals to take action. Aryan Guard members are suspects in various other crimes, including the beatings of a homeless man, a gay community member, and a cab driver from North Africa, but no arrests have resulted. In the view of the Communist Party of Canada, this pattern has gone beyond neglect, into the territory of tacit encouragement of criminal activity. If serious injury or death results from further attacks, innocent blood will not only be on the hands of the perpetrators, but also on the hands of the Calgary Police Service which hides behind the feeble claim that "both sides are equally responsible" and that the Aryan Guard is simply "exercising its right to free speech."
The time has come for the City of Calgary and the Alberta provincial government to intervene in this crisis situation. Strong political leadership is required to replace Chief Rick Hanson with a police chief who is willing and capable of ensuring that swift action is taken to bring an end to these racist attacks. In the meantime, we extend our ongoing full solidarity to anti-racist activists and all democratic-minded citizens of Calgary who are standing up to the violent neo-Nazis in their community.
It should be noted that a redwatch* style website targeting communists, anarchists and jews in Canada has a link to the recent violent attacks.
* [from wikipedia]...Redwatch is a British neo-Nazi website that publishes photographs and personal information of alleged left-wing and anti-fascist activists. There also used to be a British magazine of the same name, and with similar subject matter. The website's slogan is "Remember places, traitors' faces, they'll all pay for their crimes", a quote from neo-Nazi musician Ian Stuart Donaldson.
The information gathered by Redwatch is indexed by cities or regions. Many of the people listed are members of the Anti-Nazi League or other anti-racist or left-wing groups...

After Manuel Zelaya appeared in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, the country's capital, repression has intensified. This link below is to a blog that is dedicated to following coup events:

here's a few snippets:
...Members of the union of electrical workers of the National Electric Company (ENEE) called in to Radio Globo to announce that the Micheletti government intends to cut electricity in the entire country today...They've taken Channel 36 off the air that way...Radio Globo... is reporting that the
police and military has shot into the Brazilian Embassy...Sharpshooters are now being placed on top buildings in and around the Brazilian Embassy...A friend who lives a couple of kilometers from the Brazilian embassy wrote at 4:30 this morning to report hearing gunshots: "We can hear gun shots and more from our house, about 2km from the Brazilian Embassy. There are hundreds injured. We can hear many gunshots." This as Martha Lorena Alvarado, of the de facto regime, denies that any shots were fired. Romeo Vasquez Velasquez said "we will maintain the order no matter what the cost. "

CEO's sleazy anti-strike placard: “Sick Pay? Pay Increase? How about no pay?”

by "Mick"
from Linchpin.ca blog
On Tuesday July 14 Deputy Premier, or according to him “Citizen”, George Smitherman launched “One Toronto” a website networking volunteer scabs to pick up garbage in Toronto in the midst of a 4 week long strike by the civic workers unions CUPE 416 and 79.
Posing for media photos with a broom in hand, Smitherman had the bald faced audacity to claim that he wasn't taking sides in the strike but rather ““We’re taking one side and one side only — the side of clean streets in our city,”
Smitherman knows he can't come out and say he's organizing brigades of volunteer scabs to further his political career but that's exactly what he's doing.
Not to be outdone or perhaps inspired by Smitherman's scabs, Bay Street CEO Kathy Gregory, head of Paradigm Quest Inc a multi-million dollar mortgage underwriting and servicing company, “organized” a pathetic lunch hour confrontation between a gaggle of Paradigm employees and CUPE workers at City Hall on July 15th.
Marching with professionally made signs reading such pearls of wisdom as “Sick Pay? Pay Increase? How about no pay?” which can only leave you wondering how Gregory must treat workers that she actually employs!
Why, with such progressive attitudes towards workers by the CEO, one can only assume that all the workers who attended must really be participating totally free and uncoerced. I'm sure that if they really wanted to they could have refused to join her protest and told their boss that they're pro-union without the fear of any repercussions.
If you believe that, then let me tell you about a bridge to the island airport that I have for sale.
As pathetic and scheming as Gregory and Smitherman's antics are, one can't help but take warning that at least a small section of Toronto's big business and political elite are showing a readiness to revert to a very dirty history of so-called “Citizen Committees” that terrorized workers and trade unionists at the beginning of the 20th century.

news bulletin- South Korean workers fight off police attack
from the morning star newspaper (UK)

Wednesday 05 August 2009- Helicopter-borne police commandos have fought a pitched battle with militant strikers at a South Korean car plant, but failed to dislodge hundreds of trade unionists occupying a paint shop.
At least 50 people, mostly police and private security guards, were injured in the day's clashes.
The assault began when hundreds of commandos stormed the roof of one of the factory's two paint shops by descending from a black shipping container carried by a helicopter, while others rappelled down a rope from another helicopter.
Helmet-wearing workers, who have been occupying the plant for over two months, fought back with sticks and threw objects at the truncheon-wielding police.
Commandos also fired water cannon from the container as it was suspended above the roof while another 300 riot police launched a ground assault.
At least 500 workers withdrew to the second paint shop, which was reportedly packed with inflammable material.
The commandos eventually managed to wrest control of the rest of the compound, but authorities acknowledged that the occupation is far from over.
Korean Confederation of Trade Unions spokesman Lee Chang Kun warned that a police assault on the paint shop would be deadly.
"We will respond to it, bracing ourselves for death," Mr Lee declared.
Workers launched the occupation after Ssangyong bosses sought to impose a restructuring plan which calls for the shedding of 2,646 workers, or 36 per cent of the workforce.
Some 1,670 have left the company voluntarily but nearly 1,000 went on strike and kicked off the direct action in May.

Latest on Honduras and Colombia

As reported in Granma and the People's Weekly World online blog, the general strike continues to keep the economy dead in its tracks. Literally, as extensive roadblocks have stopped the flow of people and goods. The report says some police officers have joined the strike and that "Many people called Radio Globo, a radio station that is keeping its microphones open for the people, to report that they had been victims of repression by the army forces who attempted to halt their movement."
The Honduras armed forces have said that they will support the agreement being sought to return President Manuel Zelaya to Honduras, but with severe limits on his powers. This signals that the army is taking a somewhat moderate but still pro-establishment approach compared to Roberto Micheletti, who holds an extreme view of absolutely refusing to have Zelaya return. It's up to the people now. Here's hoping that the strike spreads.
Zelaya has set up camp on the Nicaragua border, this after crossing into Honduras twice over the past few days. Zelaya was the target of a coup d'etat after he tried to hold a referendum to gauge public opinion on changing the constitution to allow him to run a second time.
Meanwhile in Colombia, the Uribe government continued it's campaign of bloody repression. It bombed a FARC camp south of the country's capital. Any hope of peace is dismal while Alvaro Uribe is president. It should be noted that in Colombia Uribe is also planning to change the constitution in order for him to run for a third term in office. If anybody needs to be overthrown it's Uribe.

We know that they have been closing free media in Honduras. This morning (note: report is from late June) the Radio Progreso, one of the older communitarian radios of the continent has been closed by the military. Other communitarian radios have decided to protect their equipment.
The electrical energy, the telephone and the Internet have being interrupted by the coup participants trying to block the communications and make the informative censure.
And the situation worries to us in that the networks of communitarian radios of the Lenca town and the GarÃfuna town stay, as well as the free media: COMUN, Revistazo, the COFADEH and the rest of groups of the independent and communitarian media movement in Honduras.

More Conservative party control tactics

If you are unlucky enough to live in a riding with a Tory member of parliament, you may think "Well, at least they are doing a job of being a representative for the people of the riding".
Think again.
A TOP-DOWN SCRIPTED SPEECH AND TALKING POINTS
The above link shows a document that was posted on wikileaks, and shows how tightly controlled Harper Conservative MPs really are. When they go back to their respective constituencies, they are dictated to on what to say with a script. As if politics and peoples lives were a make believe stage production.
So, does your MP represent the constituents? Or does the Tory MP only report back what Steven Harper thinks is in your best interest?

WORLD NEWS bulletin for period 9th-23rd
from the morningstar (UK)

ACTIVISTS opposed to a Shell pipeline project in County Mayo, Ireland, have expressed outrage after a top campaigner was badly beaten on Thursday night by at least six people in balaclavas.
Willie Corduff, a member of the Rossport Five - who were jailed for 94 days in 2005 over their opposition to the routing of the onshore pipeline through their land - was rushed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.
Earlier this week, Shell decided to resume efforts to lay the offshore section of the pipeline after its environmental management plan was approved by Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan. Mr Corduff and two other local men climbed under a lorry at midday on Wednesday in a bid to stop work at the Corrib site.
The other two men were pulled out, but Mr Corduff decided to stay under the vehicle until he had evidence that Shell had authorisation to press on with its work.
Campaigner Sean Mallory told the Star: "Willie was planning to stay there overnight. "But at 4am, he got out to stretch his legs and was attacked by six people in balaclavas. They kneeled on his head and kicked him repeatedly."
Gardai investigated another incident at the Corrib site yesterday in which, they say, up to 15 people wearing balaclavas and carrying tools, bars and chains vandalised the area last night.
It is not known if the two incidents are connected, but commenters on online newswire Indymedia observed that the damage to the site does not fit with the peaceful tactics favoured by the Shell to Sea campaign.
They suggested the beating of Mr Corduff indicated that both incidents are more likely to be the work of agents provocateurs.
Mr Corduff is in stable condition at Mayo General Hospital.
AUSTRALIAN ACTIVISTS PROTEST CANADIAN MINING COMPANY
from indymedia newswire
Protests by the Save Lake Cowal campaign have halted work at the Barrick Gold open pit mine at Lake Cowal, New South Wales, Australia over the Easter Weekend. Lake Cowal is an ephemeral lake lying in the Lachlan River plain within the Murray-Darling Basin, home to many migratory water birds and sacred sites of the Wiradjuri people.
Twenty Eight people were arrested on Sunday when protestors walked onto the open pit mine closing it down. They were authorised to enter the mine site by Wiradjuri Tradtional Owners.
Barrick Gold, a Canadian mining company, uses highly toxic cyanide in the gold mining process with the cyanide transported over 1600 km by rail and truck from Gladstone in Queensland to Sydney and over the Blue Mountains to the mine. Since 2006 Cyanide Watch has born witness to the cyanide crimes of the gold mining industry.
The Lake Cowal Gold mine also uses up to 15 megalitres of water per day pumped from artesian bores. This bore water comes from the sacred underground Dreaming track, also know as the Bland palaeochannel. The region surrounding the mining site is enduring its eighth year of drought. The Murry Darling River basin, which produces much of Australia's agricultural produce, is under severe stress from lack of water flows caused by several years of drought and over-allocation of water for irrigation.
The protest is the seventh yearly gathering of solidarity with the Wiradjuri people and their ongoing opposition to the mine, and further expansion of the mine. "We asked our supporters to enter the mine site to bear witness to the destruction and document the mine's impact. It is important that Wiradjuri maintain access to our cultural sites." said traditional owner Neville Chappy Williams.
Members of the Wiradjuri conducted a smoking ceremony inside the mine site. They alledge that over 10,000 artefacts have been stolen and kept by Barrick Gold Corporation at the mine site in a compound encircled by a 6 foot fence.
"This is a fight for justice, Barrick Gold Corporation is destroying our culture," states Wiradjuri Traditional Owner from the Lake Cowal area, Neville Chappy Williams at the smoking ceremony, "We have been in the courts now for 10 years, it has been a desperate, never ending uphill fight but we are not giving up and we are not going away."
"They are destroying our culture so we stand firmly in the ground to assert our inherit right to occupy and enjoy our land. Aboriginal sovereignty has never been ceded, we have a right under 116 of the constitution to practice our religion."
Caroline Glass-Patterson, Wiradjuri woman from the local area stated "We stand here on poisoned and desecrated land, the smoking ceremony will cleanse and protect the artefacts. We want Barrick Gold to shut down it's operation and leave and for our artefacts to go bought back to country."
In February 2009 the NSW Land and Environment Court handed down a decision in favour of Wiradjuri Traditional Owner, Neville Chappy Williams, with an injunction restraining the NSW Minister of Planning from determining the E42 Modification Request for the proposed expansion of Barrick Gold's mine in Lake Cowal.
"We are very pleased with the result", stated Mr. Williams, "We have been fighting against the world's largest gold mining company, Barrick Gold, for nearly 10 years, we will continue to fight until we get justice. Barrick Gold has ridden shot gun over this ecologically significant and sacred land for far too long. "
In March 2008 Wiradjuri Traditional Owner, Neville 'Chappy' Williams, exposed a massive collapse at Barrick’s Cowal Gold Project in Lake Cowal.
Barrick Gold has been criticised for their mining practices by indigenous leaders from many mining regions. In May 2008 several international indigenous leaders attended Barrick Gold's Shareholder's meeting. Questions by indigenous delegates were censored from the webcast of the meeting. Many indigenous communities impacted by Barrick Gold are calling for investors to divest their shares and no longer support a transnational corporation that perpetrates gross violations of human rights, such as alleged killings, rapes, poisoned waters, poisoned rivers, poisoned soil, and forced migration.
BOLIVIAN POLICE FOIL ASSASSINATION PLOT
April 17
from morningstar (uk)
Police had attempted to arrest the men in the centre of Santa Cruz, an eastern Bolivian city and hub of anti-Morales sentiment, but they fled to a hotel where an intense 30-minute shootout took place around 4am on Thursday morning.
The mysterious group of alleged assassins - included suspects from Hungary, Ireland and possibly Croatia - detonated a grenade inside the hotel, blowing out its windows. Three of the suspects, identified as Hungarian, Irish and Bolivian, were killed.

MASSIVE PROTESTS IN OTTAWA
April 21
Over 30, 000 protesters (some estimates had 33, 000) crowded on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to demand the end to the genocide committed against the Tamil people. And demands were made to the federal government to do something. The Tory government refused to speak to the group because they flew the red Tamil Tiger flag. Only after the flags were taken down and the Maple Leaf displayed, the other parties came out to speak, including Liberals and the NDP. The Tories refused, and a staff person from the privy council office was sent out to pick up the petition instead. The Tamil Tigers are on the list of terrorist groups in Canada. This is one reason the Sri Lankan army has had a free hand in its brutal crushing of the Tigers and a large civilian population.
In other circumstances instead of terrorist, the government would say freedom fighter or partisan to describe the group if it suited Canada-U.S. foreign policy. The ANC in South Africa have called for a lasting ceasefire and an independent Tamil homeland. Coming from the ANC with its experience and history of its own struggles, this position carries some weight.
For weeks protests went on prior to April 21 and were ongoing until Wednesday the 22nd. Protesters have left the area they camped in, Wellington and Metcalfe streets in Ottawa, which the protesters had occupied for over two weeks.
420 PROTESTS ACROSS GLOBE, INCLUDING WINNIPEG
April 20 (4/20)

They were mellowed out on killer weed, but rest assured, 3000 demonstrators were angry at the Harper Tory plan to impose minimum sentences for those caught with the drug. On the lawns of the provincial legislative building, the crowd who were mostly youths, toked as one police officer looked on.
When asked why no charges or arrests were done, officer was quoted as saying "Our view is this is a worldwide protest for the proponents of decriminalizing marijuana. From a police point of view, it's not about enforcement, it's more about providing a safe environment for people to express their views. It doesn't mean we promote the breaking of acts or statutes but we're trying to be realistic." Was this about the police being unenthusiastic about obsolete drug laws or the sheer numbers of rebellious tokers?
Bill C-15 would impose jail sentences for those caught with marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The interpretation by law enforcement could be loosely interpreted. For example, the possibility exists for youths to be busted simply by growing one pot plant. Just call it "for purpose of trafficking" and a minimum of 6 months in jail is imposed. In a provincial jail, on a provincial budget. Because of a federal Tory government.

OCCUPATION AFTER OCCUPATION
Schools
Students in Croatia have taken over multiple university campuses. Regular classes were cancelled and the occupiers have begun new classes to be taught by their peers. The demand of free education is central to the occupations.
Housing
With the mounting housing crises, the squatting movement is having a resurgence as a means of finding housing and protesting. In Reykjavik, Iceland an abandoned house owned by a developer was squatted in protest of its slated demolition for a shopping mall. The occupation lasted from April 9th to the 16th. The occupation lasted two more hours however, when activists barricaded themselves in on several levels. The police took two hours to get through everything with chainsaws, before violently evicting the squatters.

Bolivian President on hunger strike

From The Morning Star Online
BOLIVIAN President Evo Morales has announced he is going on hunger strike to put pressure on Congress to set a firm date for general elections that are likely to return him to power.
Bolivia's opposition-led Senate has failed to approve a law to handle the elections, which are mandated by a Morales-backed constitutional reform approved by voters in January.
The socialist president, who took office in 2006, has suggested that opposition leaders are trying to block the planned December elections with delaying tactics.
He said on Thursday he was starting the strike "to defend the vote of the people."
Fourteen leaders of labour and social groups said they were joining Mr Morales on the hunger strike.
They did not say how rigorous it would be, but such protests in Bolivia usually involve taking water and chewing coca leaves, which help ward off hunger pangs. Mr Morales rose to prominence as leader of a coca-growers' union.
The election Bill has been held up by demands for an updated voter registry, by arguments over whether Bolivians living outside the country should be able to vote and over a dispute about the number of seats in Congress that should be assigned to indigenous groups.
Under the new constitution that took effect in January and aims to further empower Bolivia's long-suppressed indigenous majority, Congress was supposed to have enacted the elections law by Thursday.
Bolivians are to vote for president and a new Congress.
Mr Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, is the favourite to win re-election over a fractured opposition.

Wikileaks releases NATO report on civilian deaths
February 16, 2009
A confidential NATO report from January reveals that civilian deaths from the war in Afghanistan have increased by 46% over the past year.
The 12 page report was authenticated and released in full today by Wikileaks.
(click on link to see map)
ISAF Security Summary 2008
The report shows a dramatic escalation of the war and civil disorder. Coalition deaths increased by 35%, assassinations and kidnappings by 50% and attacks on the Kabul based Government of Hamid Karzai also more than doubled, rising a massive 119%.
The report highlights huge increases on attacks aimed at Coalition forces, including a 27 % increase in IED attacks, a 40%. rise in rifle and rocket fire and an increase in surface to air fire of 67%.
According to the report, outside of the capital Kabul only one in two families had access to even the most basic health care, and only one in two children had access to a school.
The disclosure follows the unrelated arrest of Colonel Owen McNally earlier this month for passing older civilian death toll figures to Human Rights Watch analyst and former BBC radio reporter Rachel Reid. Human Rights Watch published a report based around that data, which covered 2006-2007, last September.
The London Times, stated that American military officials were "seething" over the leaks.
A UK Ministry of Defence source reportedly told the Daily Mail:
"What McNally passed on will not cost lives in the sense that it doesn't give specific military details. But the whole point of defeating the Taliban is winning hearts and minds and stopping the population joining their cause. If they think we're lying to them, it could become a very dangerous place. This has caused a diplomatic row and the Americans are not happy at all."
Wikileaks legal spokesperson Jay Lim stated "We deplore the arrest of Colonel McNally for revealing civilian death figures. It is clear that Col. McNally's actions are of the highest moral calibre. His example has encouraged others to step forward."
NATO is not likely to find Wikileaks' source so readily. The site uses state of the art anonymization technologies, and the identity of its sources are protected under the Swedish Press Freedom Act.

youth rise up in France
MORE PROTESTS IN ICELAND, RUSSIA.huge protests in Iceland [SHOWN] are rare and
this one has been dubbed the 'saucepan revolution'
for its use of pot banging and forcing the
PM to resign [photo:wikimedia]
A BBC report (click on post heading above) shows that young workers and students in France know how to push back. And not surprisingly, quotes like "new generation of activists", and "re-birth of the violent extreme left" inspire a new red scare. (yawn). Violence only is an equal and opposite reaction to police provocateurs, and 'plate glass revolutionaries'. Sarkozy's right wing attack on workers in such bad times has them raising hell. Is the government saying 'let them eat cake' ?
Here in Canada the Tories sure are. Everything is fundamentally fine they say, though evidence says otherwise. The budget still pretends that the rich will volunteer to save us. Harper gives our tax dollars to the banks, next to nothing for EI, students loans or social housing. CEOs may have icing, bosses cake, while we struggle to win bread for ourselves. History has proven that we have to fight for every crumb.
