Anti-imperialist youth of the world says, “imperialists, hands off Venezuela!”

Special to RY

To mark the anniversary of Cuban-Argentinian revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, the anti-imperialist youth of the world launches a solidarity campaign with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Is there any better way to celebrate Che than by showing that young people are determined to fulfill their objective of seeing a free and sovereign Latin America?

The decision to initiate this campaign on June 14 was made by the General Council of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, which met last April in Caracas during a solidarity mission with Bolivarian Venezuela. Around thirty organizations from all over the world have unanimously endorsed this call for mobilization, a timely one considering the growing aggressiveness of Western imperialism against Venezuela and Latin America.

Since last January, the United States and its allies, including Canada, have redoubled their efforts against Venezuela by recognizing an illegitimate, unjustified, parallel President with the eventual goal of destabilizing the country in order to justify a military intervention. The Venezuelan people however didn’t allow this to happen and continue to show their firm desire to protect their sovereignty and the social gains they have achieved over the last 21 years.

Today, the imperialists would like to make the Venezuelan people pay for not giving up that fight. In the tactic of declaring himself president "Juan Guaido" seems to have failed, but the fact remains that the imperialists will spare no effort against Venezuela. Already, the United States has stormed the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, violating the principle of extraterritoriality of diplomatic buildings. Canada, in support of US imperialism, has closed its embassy in Caracas and threatens not to renew the diplomatic credentials of consular employees in order to break diplomatic relations.

These attacks are not isolated nor exclusively directed against Venezuela. They are part of a dangerous escalation of imperialist violence against the peoples of the world. Thus, solidarity with Venezuela is not only the affair of a country, but the affair of all the peoples of the world united against their exploiters.

As the call for mobilization states, "while the contradictions of imperialism are still deepening and are exposing the peoples to new threats and new dangers, the World Federation of Democratic Youth insists on the continuous struggle of the youth against imperialism, for the society of peace, social progress and justice and the end of the exploitation.” The statement also denounces the attempts to destabilize Venezuela, including the refusal to recognize Nicolas Maduro as the only legitimate President, and reaffirms the WFDY’s support for the Venezuelan people's struggle to defend their sovereignty.
